Simple tasks like Deletion and Undo are so stupidly designed, they're still a mystery in many cases, even after my 6 hours of Tutorial-based learning. What a frustrating waste of high value Key+Click Commands. Control+Click pulls up the Contextual Menu that Right Clicking does. Instead, it doesn't matter what Key you add to clicking and dragging - the Command, Option, or Shift Key all result in the same action of moving the Map around the screen. For example, you can't Click and Drag to choose multiple items. Then, you're blessed with the absence of simple universally accepted logic for how the App works. Straight away, you're met by a Giant Dead Node labeled "Functions Index" that links to a file that can't be found anywhere in Freeplane's Documentation when you look for it separate from the link. The fun begins with Many Dead Links on the Freeplane Support web pages and continues straight into the Map they use for their Tutorial. I only made it half way through the Tutorial, and I still feel like I don't have a handle on even basic features due to the mess this App is in. Due to the supposed potential of its features, I literally spent 6 hours trying to learn it using its outdated, incorrect, and often confusing Tutorial. In reality, it is a complete mess that has only left me extremely frustrated and angry at the Freeplane Community for thinking its even slightly acceptable to dump such garbage on an unsuspecting and trusting public, even for Open Source!!! Frankly, it qualifies as abusive. Sadly, I must also report that Freeplane only looks like a wonderful program, with many features I've been trying to find in a single app. If not, you are simply saying that the Freeplane Community wishes to be abusive in its practices. And his failure to constructively receive my first attempt to kindly inform him of the above has prompted me to say it more forcefully here.Īt the very least, PLEASE REMOVE THE FREEPLANE TUTORIAL OR POST A CLEAR WARNING THAT NEWCOMERS PROCEED AT THEIR OWN RISK BECAUSE OF ALL THE INCORRECT INSTRUCTION IT CONTAINS. Frankly, his request only confirmed my negative opinions of Freeplane as a community that I would not want to be a part of unless I liked being victimized by unkind project management. Yes, that certainly makes me the perfect person to fix the Tutorial. If you read it, I'm sure you'll find I was quite clear and respectful in tone, despite my exteme frustration with the Mess that is Freeplane at present.ĭimitry also thought it was a kind, thoughtful, and intelligent response to ask me, as a Newcomer, to volunteer to fix the Tutorial, even though I don't know how to use Freeplane and would be forced to stumble along, again, trying to figure out what didn't work without having any knowledge of how to fix it. Still, I frankly find his response to be a cop-out and further confirmation of why Freeplane is such an abusive mess. ![]() To be fair, I imagine the lack of formatting that appears in the Review Posting may have contributed to his confusion, so I have copied here with its original formatting for clarification. Sadly, Dimitry didn't care enough to keep the following review alive as a thread for general review because he thought my emotions got in the way of it serving as constructive feedback. In total they cost €72, a bargin in my book.I posted the following as a 1-Star review due to my horrible day-long experience trying to learn Freeplane. Using a computer without these three applications make me feel encumbered and slow. There are a couple of apps that does this, I picked Typinator because it work in all applications and it’s very stable. If I type “tel” Typinator expands that to my phone number, “MAc OS X” becomes “Mac OS X” and “belive” becomes “believe”. Typinator insert common strings for me as well as auto-correcting typing errors. With the Keyboard Maestro iPhone app you can execute commands on your computer from anywhere. I also use it to remap commands, give shortcuts to AppleScripts, control iTunes etc. Keyboard Maestro makes all my F-keys do something useful. It gives you access to more or less everything on your computer with a very few keystrokes. It may have started out as a simple launcher but today LaunchBar is a lot more. LaunchBar is under active development and it’s both fast and stable. LaunchBar 5 has since a few month replaced the discontinued Quicksilver for me.
